How to Choose a Shopify Plan Based on Pricing and Features
The main Shopify pricing plans are not very different. There are only a few fundamental differences, except for the price:
- The number of employees you can add to the store admin panel so that each of them can perform the range of tasks to which you have given them access.
- The amount of commission Shopify pays for each payment you receive from customers.
- The presence or absence of a shipping cost calculator.
Below are some guidelines that will help you objectively choose the best Shopify plan for your business:
If you are not ready to open your own store and already have your own website, blog or social network profile where you make sales, thenthe “Starter” plan will suit you. It will provide you with a secure payment page for goods, reports and easy integration with social networks or individual sites.
For a growing business that needs its own online store, the“Basic” tariff plan is suitable. The “Basic” tariff will allow you to connect up to 2 employees (except you) to the store admin panel. And even if you have more employees, you can simply ask them to use not standard employee accounts, but partner accounts, to which the Shopify account limit does not apply.
For businesses with monthly sales exceeding $6,000 (or $4,500 if you're on an annual Shopify plan), you'll benefit from upgrading tothe Shopify plan , as the difference between the Shopify plan and the Basic plan will be offset by the difference in payment fees, which are 1% lower for the Shopify plan.
A bonus for switching to the “Shopify” plan will be the ability to create and sell “Gift Cards” for your store to your users. The “Advanced” tariff will be beneficial only if your business requires a calculator for the cost of delivery of third-party delivery services connected to the store.
The “Shopify Plus” plan is worth considering if you own a large business. The “Shopify Plus” plan has many bonuses, for example:
- Ability to use a range of Shopify apps not available on other plans.
- Ability to make changes to the Checkout page to add any non-standard functionality to the checkout process or custom design solutions.
- A separate site with closed/free access for wholesale sales, if you are ready to conduct B2B business.
- Increased Shopify server speeds to ensure your online store runs quickly even with heavy traffic.
- Personal support that will help you not only with urgent issues, but also give advice on how to grow your business based on the capabilities of Shopify.
How Shopify Plans Are Billed
Shopify offers a variety of pricing plans, payment cycles, credit card rates, and more. For more information about invoicing, see Manage invoicing .
If you want to cancel your plan, you need to pause or deactivate your store.
Payment for the plan and other expenses
The Basic Shopify, Shopify, and Advanced Shopify plans vary in monthly payment prices, credit card fees, and third-party transaction fees.
Depending on your location, your plan is billed in one of the following currencies:
- Euro (EUR)
- British Pounds Sterling (GBP)
- US Dollars (USD)
- Indian Rupees (INR)
Monthly payments
A monthly payment is a recurring subscription fee for using Shopify, which varies depending on the plan you choose. The price associated with the plan you choose is included in the invoice that is issued at the end of your chosen billing cycle.
If you sign up for a one, two, or three year billing cycle, you may receive a discount on your subscription fee.
The plan is non-refundable. For more information, please see Shopify's terms of service.
Credit Card Rates
Shopify charges you a small fee so you can accept major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard as payment in your store. You don't pay a fee to the credit card payment processor itself.
The amount of these fees differs between an online store and a Shopify POS terminal due to the security and risk involved in accepting a payment online versus accepting a payment in person.
Credit card rates vary depending on the plan you choose.
As a result of Brexit, Visa and Mastercard have changed the way they classify and charge for transactions in the UK and EU. To comply with these changes, Shopify classifies these transactions as international, and you will be charged the current international rate for your region.
Credit card transaction fees are not refunded to you when you refund a buyer.
Third party transaction fees
Third-party transaction fees are fees that apply to each transaction when you use a third-party payment provider to accept customer payments. The transaction fee covers the cost of integrating Shopify with external payment providers and depends on the plan you choose.
When you use Shopify Payments, you won't be charged third-party transaction fees for orders processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay installments, and Paypal Express, and you won't be charged transaction fees for self-service payment methods like cash, cash on delivery (COD), and bank transfer.
Shopify Plus merchants using Shopify Payments pay no transaction fees, except for merchants in Austria, Belgium, and Sweden.
Payment provider
Payment providers offer a service to transfer money from your customers to you. Credit card payment providers allow your customers to pay with a credit card. If you want to accept credit card payments from your customers, you can set up Shopify Payments or a third-party payment provider.
Shopify Payments
Shopify has its own payment provider, Shopify Payments, which integrates directly with your checkout. When using Shopify Payments:
- You pay only the credit card rate, with no additional fees for third-party transactions.
- Your customers can enter payment information when placing an order without leaving your online store page.
- You can set up Shopify Payments directly from your Shopify admin panel instead of going to another website or account.
- You can view your payouts in real time directly from your Shopify admin panel.
If you want to provide your customers with another payment method, such as PayPal or a custom payment method, you can set them up in addition to Shopify Payments without having to pay any additional third-party transaction fees.
Third party payment systems
If Shopify Payments is not available in your country or you prefer not to use it, you can activate one of the third-party payment providers that Shopify integrates with. In this case, third-party transaction fees will apply.
Once you select a payment provider from the available options , you can configure your payment settings in your Shopify admin area.
Billing Cycle
A billing cycle is the 30-day interval at which Shopify bills you for your plan. You can't choose the date you're charged, but you can extend your billing cycle to a longer interval (one, two, or three years) to get a discount.
App subscriptions are on a different billing cycle, so their billing cycles may not always match your Shopify plan subscription billing date.
If you decide to pause or deactivate your store, be sure to cancel your app subscription to avoid additional charges.
Free Shopify Store Trial (Trial Version)
If you want to try out Shopify before activating a monthly plan, you can sign up for a free trial. It starts automatically when you first sign up for your store on any of the plans.
When a visitor opens a store that is on a free trial, by default they will see either a page asking them to enter their visitor password or an inactive checkout (depending on the Shopify plan they have chosen).
To allow your customers to browse your store, add products to their cart, and purchase them, you can remove the visitor password and enable checkout by choosing a paid Shopify plan.
You won't lose the changes you made to your store during your free trial once you upgrade to a paid plan. If you upgrade to a paid plan while still in your free trial, you won't be charged for a subscription until your free trial ends.
If you add apps to your Shopify store during the free trial period, all app-related charges will be included in your next invoice.
You can set up your store during the free trial, but you'll need to choose a monthly plan to activate checkout or remove the visitor password before you can start selling your products or services. For more information, see Preparing Your Store for Launch.
If you don't select a monthly plan at the end of your free trial, your store will be suspended and you won't be able to continue working on it until you select a paid plan.
If you want to cancel your Shopify account during your free trial and you haven't selected a plan yet, you don't need to take any action. Your account will be frozen and you won't be charged after your trial ends.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Free Trial
Shopify offers several great features to help you create and manage your store. You can use the free trial to see how these features can help you sell your products and grow your business.
To get the most out of your free trial:
- Add a few products and information about them to make sure they display correctly in your online store.
- Create a collection to organize your products.
- Set up Shopify Payments or make sure the third-party payment provider you want to use is supported by Shopify.
- Check out the Settings page in your Shopify admin to learn how to set up taxes, shipping, and other sales channels.

If you are planning to sell hand-to-hand , you can download the Shopify POS app and learn about the functionality of the various app settings .
Local Pricing for Your Shopify Subscription Plan
In some countries and regions, Shopify offers adjusted pricing based on local costs of living. Local pricing for Shopify plans is determined by where your store is located. Shopify's terms of service require that you specify a specific location based on the jurisdiction of your business.
In regions where local pricing for Shopify subscription plans is available, the subscription rate for your plan will be applied automatically when you sign up. In other words, when you create your new store, you will automatically see your local pricing.
If your store was open before the local pricing feature was introduced, but is located in a region with local pricing, you can switch your subscription plan to a local plan by upgrading to the same plan. The price will then match the local plan.
Local pricing applies to Shopify subscription plan pricing only.
How to Change Your Shopify Plan to Local Pricing
If local pricing is available for your Shopify subscription plan, you can switch your subscription plan to a local plan by switching to the same plan you're currently on, but at a local price.
To do this, you need to do the following:
- In your Shopify admin panel, click Settings and then click Plan.
- On the Plan page, click Change Plan in the Plan details section.
- Browse the currently available plans and click "Choose plan".
- Select a billing cycle and payment method, then review plan details, billing date, and plan charges.
- Click "Start plan". If you do not want to change your plan, click "Cancel".
